Cell Phone use while driving

Turn the key. Put on your seatbelt. Check your mirrors. Adjust your music. Turn off your cell phone? Most people do not have that on their checklist of things to do when they’re getting into their car. The number of accidents related to cell phones is extremely high and growing. Just recently that horrendous train accident in California gave more validity to states like New York and California passing legislation against the use of handheld devices while driving, but still allowing things like bluetooth, and other headsets. It is shown however that it is not so much the act of taking your hand of the wheel to answer the phone, or dial, as it is the conversation itself that is distracting.

A company called Aegis Mobility is currently developing software that would prevent calls and text messages from coming through on cell phones, when the phone is detected to be in motion at particular speeds, by using the GPS chip, or WiFi. This technology would hopefully be able to decrease the occurrence of these “Drving while Distracted’ accidents. It works like this; when the phone is detected to be in motion, the caller receives a message that says something along the lines of “the person you are trying to reach appears to be driving” and gives an option for emergency calls, if it is an emergency then the cell phone owner will be alerted of the call immediately.

I could be described as a “Distracted Driver”, making calls on the way home from work, calling to check on family during the free time I find, which often happens to be between meetings, and classes in the car. I cannot count the number of times that I have answered the phone while driving, even if I am on my way to see the person who is calling. In that split second that you reach for the phone, glance down to see who is calling, anything could happen. Part of the problem though, is that as a society we are far too busy. Forcing ourselves to multitask, and run ourselves ragged just to try and stay afloat. Perhaps this software would be a blessing. . . .

What do you think?
