Asus Eee PC S101 released….A Challenge to the Macbook Air?

3 10 2008

Today, Asus announced yet another Eee pc line to their what seems like thousands of already released Eee PCs. This one, however, is a bit different and is actually quite appealing. At just 2.2 pounds and 0.7″ and with a TOP price of $800 which includes 64GB SSD….this is sure to spark some interest in the netbook community.

The netbook is sporting a 10.2″ LED screen running at WSVGA (1024×600), a 1.6ghz Atom PC, Bluetooth, 3 USB ports, VGA, Ethernet, and audio jacks. And incase you thought I typed it wrong, I did indeed mean 3 USB ports….the Air has aย paltry 1. The only bad difference this has over the Macbook Air, is the Air sports a core 2 duo processor while this is the ever popular Atom cpu. One thing consumers won’t find too apealing is, like the Air, the S101 has a non-replaceable 5 hour battery. 5 hours is great for many, but not allowing the use of a backup battery or when the battery fails in 2 years down the road, it surely is a turn off to many. I admit that i particurally don’t like apple very much, and will try to find anything that makes their products less appealing ๐Ÿ™‚

This may not be in the same class in terms of speed with the air, but in terms of thickness, weight, and most imporantly PRICE – this matches, exceeds, and murders the Air.ย  The specs are below and you will notice that XP is not included in the higher configs, and only included in the lowest config which sports 16GB SSD and 16GB SD $699. There are 3 color options as shown in the specs, the one pictured is the brown version.:
