MacBook Air going on a Diet

11 11 2008

By Kris at 5:57 PM

AppleInsider has discovered that Apple is going to make their MacBook Air even lighter by replacing the bottom of the MacBook Air chassis with carbon fiber which is used in aircraft parts, bike frames, and high performance car bodies. But now recently computer vendors such as Sony and HP have used this material to construct lighter and thinner laptops. As of now the MacBook Air weights three pounds if Apple just replaces the bottom part of the case then the MacBook Air would lose 100 grams making it only 2.78 pounds. But knowing Apple they’ll most likely make it even lighter then 2.78 pounds. Comment.

“Although AppleInsider publishes the aforementioned information strictly as a rumor, it’s believed the shift to a carbon fiber bottom is far enough along in its development cycle that it could appear in a revision to the MacBook Air sometime next year.”

The new MacBook and MacBook Pro

The new MacBook

The new MacBook from Apple. Look familiar...?

By Max at 3:39 PM

Well, they’re here. The new MacBook and the new MacBook Pro. Possibly the most anticipated release since the first iBook, these two machines are a step foward in many ways, but a step backwards in others. In my opinion Apple wasn’t aiming at upgrading the current Mac users with this new model. I think they were aiming at making PC users switch. Let’s face it, Apple hit a home run design wise with the MacBook Air Read the rest of this entry »

Five Reasons To Not Ditch The Desktop

21 10 2008

By Jonathan at 4:00 AM

I run into a lot of people nowadays who are getting rid of their current desktop and laptop setup to sport a single a computer that takes on both roles. I agree with many of you that laptops are more powerful than ever before, and especially now we are seeing many laptops that can perform at about the same level as their less mobile counterparts. Despite this, having both a desktop and laptop can be a huge advantage.

Are you ready?

13 10 2008

By Jonathan at 3:50 PM

Apple is hosting another keynote tomorrow focusing on notebook computers. No one knows what is going to be released. Many think it is going to be a new curved body similar to the MacBook Air. Others think it will be a screwless molded aluminum body. What are your predictions?

I personally think they might come out with a Mac tablet!

The Tech Lunch will be offering a complete summary and review following the keynote tomorrow.

Touching on the new Macbooks & Macbook Pros

9 10 2008

By Adam at 8:00 PM

So it is now official, Apple has sent out invites to the press for a special event on Tuesday October 14th. The rumor mill has been churning out all kinds of stories about the so called “brick” that was previously thought to be a possible Apple TV upgrade of some sort. Considering how many years its been since Apple has released a significant upgrade to their hugely popular notebook line, we welcome a changing of the guard. I purchased my second revision Macbook Pro in October 2006 and since then at least one more revision was released with upgraded processors and a gesture sensitive touchpad. A lot has happened since the release of the Macbook line up. The most noteworthy item to emerge has been the surge in gesture controlled devices such as the ever popular iPhone and iPod Touch.

Apple to cut future Macbooks from aluminum bricks

7 10 2008

By Spencer at 8:30 AM

According to sources around the web including DailyTech, Apple will be machining its new MacBooks entirely from blocks of aluminum.  The cuts will be done with lasers and water jets and will reduce manufacturing costs, weight, and eliminate the need for screws.  An interesting choice at best – but no longer will your MacBook be plagued with screws around the rim.  It should also make repairs much easier, as there will be less parts necessary to remove.

Asus Eee PC S101 released….A Challenge to the Macbook Air?

3 10 2008

Today, Asus announced yet another Eee pc line to their what seems like thousands of already released Eee PCs. This one, however, is a bit different and is actually quite appealing. At just 2.2 pounds and 0.7″ and with a TOP price of $800 which includes 64GB SSD….this is sure to spark some interest in the netbook community.

The netbook is sporting a 10.2″ LED screen running at WSVGA (1024×600), a 1.6ghz Atom PC, Bluetooth, 3 USB ports, VGA, Ethernet, and audio jacks. And incase you thought I typed it wrong, I did indeed mean 3 USB ports….the Air has a paltry 1. The only bad difference this has over the Macbook Air, is the Air sports a core 2 duo processor while this is the ever popular Atom cpu. One thing consumers won’t find too apealing is, like the Air, the S101 has a non-replaceable 5 hour battery. 5 hours is great for many, but not allowing the use of a backup battery or when the battery fails in 2 years down the road, it surely is a turn off to many. I admit that i particurally don’t like apple very much, and will try to find anything that makes their products less appealing :)

This may not be in the same class in terms of speed with the air, but in terms of thickness, weight, and most imporantly PRICE – this matches, exceeds, and murders the Air.  The specs are below and you will notice that XP is not included in the higher configs, and only included in the lowest config which sports 16GB SSD and 16GB SD $699. There are 3 color options as shown in the specs, the one pictured is the brown version.:
