Dell Tells Employees to Take An Unpaid Vacation

In an effort to reduce costs, Dell is now asking many of its employees (nicely) to take a week’s vacation, unpaid.  This was part of a memo from Michael Dell, Dell’s CEO, who sent a company-wide email to all employees detailing his plans to reduce costs this quarter (which ends in January, incidentally.)

Some have cried foul, but a week’s vacation to reduce Dell’s costs is much preferred to a layoff overall.  Anyone in business knows that labor is (usually) the most costly part of any organization, which is why companies usually downsize before selling assets.  Dell’s move is simply a sign of the economic times.  Newly elected Barack Obama (congrats to him, by the way) has his work cut out for him, for sure.
